Internet Marketing for Small Businesses - How to Identify Keywords for Your Website

Today I'm going to discuss a strategy that you can use to identify keywords that you can target for your website.

You might be wondering, why is it important to identify keywords important?

Here's the answer: you need to target specific keywords for each of the pages on your website so that you can set them up for SEO purposes (e.g. Title tags, META tags, content on your web page, etc.).

Here's a step-by-step strategy that you can use to identify keywords that you may want to target (remember, each of your pages should target its own individual keyword):

1. Brainstorm 5-10 keywords that people may enter into Google when searching for your type of business.  If you'd like to find local clients, add your city into the keyword as well.  For instance, if you're a plumber in Miami, you might want to try "plumbers in Miami" as one of your keywords.

2. Once you have your initial keyword list, head on over to the Google Keyword Tool.  Once you're there, enter in your initial list of keywords into the box under "Enter one keyword or phrase per line:" and make sure you have checked "Use synonyms."  Click on "Get keyword ideas" when you're finished.

3. The Google Keyword Tool will now pull up a bunch of keywords with an estimate of the average number of searches for each specific keyword.  At this point, we want to identify the keywords that have the most searches, least amount of advertiser competition, and are most relevant to your website's pages. 

4.  At this point, you can select some keywords that you can use for your website based on the information in front of you.  The more searches for a particular keyword and the less amount of advertise competition for that keyword, the better the keyword is for you.
